VERA G. SWANLUND It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Vera Swanlund on February 10, 2006 at the Riverview Health Centre, following a courageous battle with cancer. Vera was born in Saskatoon, SK on July 25, 1931, the fifth child of Hilbert and Catherine Hellofs. Moving often as a child, the family settled in Winnipeg in 1938. While many in her family migrated to California, Vera remained in Winnipeg where she raised her family. An avid gardener, her love of plants was only surpassed by the delight of time spent with her three sons and other family members. She loved to entertain, cooking endlessly, and a home filled with laughter, friends, and family were among her happiest times. While small in stature, she more than compensated with her strength of spirit and sense of determination, amazing those around her in the last months. She was a proud woman, fiesty to the end. She will be lovingly remembered by family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Bob; her three sons, Paul (Los Angeles), Doug (Sidney, BC), and Gord (Toronto); her daughters-in-law Susan (LA), Cathy (LA), Lonni (Sidney), and Shelley (Toronto); her grandchildren, Erica (Rich) and Sally (LA), Clay and Per (Sidney); her sister Dorothy (Seal Beach CA), her brothers Aubrey (Marianne) (Culver City CA) and Cecil (Cherry Valley CA); and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Hilbert and Catherine; her sister Eileen; her brothers Norval and Vern; brother-in-law Hal; and sister-in-law Marlene, and her cousin Kay. Given the strong connection to California, a second service will be held at a later date in Los Angeles for family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Wong at Cancer Care Manitoba and Dr. Garcia, the nurses, and staff at Riverview Health Centre, ward 3E for their support and care during her last weeks. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home with Rev. Sharon Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, Riverview Health Centre, or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Reading the Winnipeg FP on my computer in Arizona, I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to all of you and especially to Gord. Your mom was very special. We somehow would come in contact every few years. Our friendship started across the street from each other and we seem to have always been able to pick up our last conversation immediatley. May you have so many wonderful memories of your mom and I know she will always be in your heart. My condolences to you and all of your family. Yours truly, Jane Smith (Garry's mom) - Posted by: Jane Smith (Family) on: Feb 14, 2006
