LEONARD SOMERFELD On Monday, February 13, 2006 at the Selkirk General Hospital, Len peacefully passed away in his 84th year with family and friends at his bedside. He was predeceased by his mother and young brother, while he was quite young, by his father Adolf in 1958, several aunts, uncles, his cousin Al Somerfeld and brother-in-law Steve Ftoma. Len is survived by his wife Anna Marie; son Robert; grandsons, Tyler and Connor; sisters-in-law, Stella Brink (Len), Olga Gnidziejko (Harry) and Roberta Ftoma; brother-in-law John Ftoma (Gail); cousins, Kay Grabke (Irv), Rose Cozens (Bill), Henry Sommerfeld, Erwin Bartkowski, Gordon Bartkowski and their extended families. Len was born in Gastopol, Poland and came to Canada as a young child. He grew up and attended school in the Whitemouth area, and helped out on the family farm. In the 1940's he moved to Winnipeg and in following years worked at various jobs, CNR, Lee Bern Electronics, Magnasonic as a sales rep and the Manitoba Government, retiring in 1987. He married his wife Anna Marie Ftoma in 1958, living in Winnipeg until 1973, when they moved to St. Andrews. Len loved working in the garden and caring for the home, he loved to golf and fish, and particularly enjoyed conversations with friends and family. He especially enjoyed the coffee breaks at Horton's, where he and Layne Huff solved the problems of the world. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Saude officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. The family would like to extend special thanks to the medical and nursing staff and members of Palliative Care at the Selkirk General Hospital for their care and support.
