Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT FREDERICK (FRED) BAKER Fred Baker passed away February 14, 2006. Fred was born in Regina on May 8, 1914, but grew up in Fort Qu'Appelle, SK. His family moved to Winnipeg in the 1930s. He met Louisa in Guelph while attending the Trent Institute learning his trade, baking. They were married in 1938 and returned to Winnipeg. In 1941, he enlisted in the army (Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) and became an army cook. In 1945, he landed in England and was in Piccadilly Circus on VE day. From there he went to Holland with the Occupying forces, sending the boys home. He called his own bakery Piccadilly Cake Shop which he operated until 1971. Not ready to retire, he went up to Northern Manitoba to cook at the Jen-Peg Hydro Project. After that he became a Commissionaire and worked at the Fresh Water Institute and Deer Lodge Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife Louisa in 1981, his parents and one sister Edith. He is survived by sisters, Gwen MacTavish and Phyllis Baker and brother Harold (Betty) in Vancouver. He is missed especially by his children, Albert also known as Abe (Yang), Margaret Durrani, Charles Baker and Susan (Gary) Styrchak; grandchildren, Alan, Katherine, Stephen, Karen, Ahmed, Sabiha, Sadiya and Annie and Fred in Australia; and great-granddaughters, Axelle and Nastassja. He was a member of No. 2 Brooklands Legion for 50 years. As a lifelong avid curler, he played on legion curling teams as well as other rinks. Special thanks to the staff at Tower 7 in Deer Lodge Centre for making his two and one half years there homey. A memorial service will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Monday, February 20 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer Society, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. Sorry to hear of Uncle Fred's death.I have many fond memories of the cake shop, and going to Logan Street to swim with Charlie, Susan, and Margaret.It was nice going to the family picnics, which Uncle Fred was always a big part of (all of his nice baked goodies).
