WESLEY NEWCOMBE GOODSPEED With greatest sorrow we announce the passing of our unconditionally loved Wesley. After a grave illness, he lost the courageous battle on February 18, 2006. Wes was born August 25, 1941 in Sudbury and grew up in Garson, Levack and Coniston, ON. He was the dearly beloved husband and best friend of Lila; adoring and much-loved father of Melanie (David Derwin) and Jonathan (Alison); proud grandfather of Nathan Derwin and Hunter Goodspeed; precious son of Herbert and the late Pauline Goodspeed and supportive brother to Dale Goodspeed (deceased). He leaves to mourn him cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews and many friends. A graduate of University of Western Ontario, B.A. (Economics) 1964, he first worked at General Motors, Oshawa before joining Proctor Gamble, Winnipeg for a successful 28 year career until an enjoyable early retirement in 1994. Wes was everyone's favourite, young and old with his zest for life, generous spirit, welcoming smile and contagious laugh. He could always be counted on to help in a heartbeat, as a mentor, sounding board, coach, role model, teacher, sympathetic listener and as a resource with a wealth of information. He was the perfect M.C. at many celebrations arriving in full costume and engaging everyone. Wes was all about others, cherishing his family and making life a better place by filling every moment with joy. Nothing was too much trouble. He especially loved children and was the cheering fan for Melanie and Jonathan and at everyone's events. He was a fundraiser for many charities and committed volunteer at: Norberry Community Club, Canadian Mental Health Association and served as President of Skills Unlimited, Riel P.C. Party of Manitoba, and St. Boniface Conservative Party of Canada. He served as Vice-Chairman of Gull Harbour Resort and as Commissioner of the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission. Thanks to the wonderful band of angels who supported us and sent rich stories for a legacy book for his grandchildren. Our heartfelt thanks go to all you exceptional caregivers at the Health Sciences Centre where we made our home for the last four months. You nurtured us while we lived in the essence of life at this sacred time. A celebration of Wes' life will be held on March 4, 2:00 p.m. at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (Wardlaw and Nassau). Wes was a proud Canadian, committed to the democratic process for a civil society and therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wesley and Lila Goodspeed Bursary in Political Science, University of Manitoba, 179 Continuing Education Building, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2, 474-9195 or CancerCare Manitoba.

  • HE WAS MY FRIEND. HE LOVED HIS FAMILY. HE LOVED HIS FELLOW MAN. WHEN A PERSON DIES THEIR LIFE'S HISTORY OFTEN TAKES ON AN ANGELIC PAST THAT IN MANY CASES IS LARGELY FICTION. THIS CANNOT BE SAID OF WES. THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE OF THIS CHILD OF GOD. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT 'THE GOOD DIE YOUNG'. YOU DIED TOO YUNG WES, YOUR LEAVING LEAVES A HOLE THAT CAN NEVER BE FILLED. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN GOOD FRIEND. - Posted by: CASEY J. HANSUM (FRIEND) on: Mar 25, 2013
