GEORGE BLACK George Black passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2006 after a short illness. Born June 11, 1920, he lived his whole life in St. James. He attended Assiniboine School and St. James Collegiate. Lt. George Black served with the Royal Regina Rifles Regiment in the Second World War. He was a POW, captured at the Leopold Canal. He worked for 30 years with DVA both at Deer Lodge Hospital and at the downtown location. After retiring in 1975 he enjoyed time with his family, home, yard and community. He was predeceased by his wife Betty (Heighton) in 1999 and is survived by his son Robert and wife Sue; daughter Catherine Bowes; grandchildren, Ron Bowes with fiance Monique Orchard of Regina, Katie Bowes of Toronto, Douglas and Jennifer Black of Winnipeg; his brother and sister-in-law, H. Campbell Black and Margaret of Winnipeg, as well as nieces, nephews and friends. We wish to thank the staff of T5 at Deer Lodge Centre for their special care above and beyond all expectations over the past four years, as well as the staff at Grace Hospital for their support. A celebration of George's life will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church, 1476 Portage Ave., on Wednesday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. with The Reverend R. J. Gillanders officiating. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca. Should friends so desire, donations in memory of George may be made to the St. James Presbyterian Church, Deer Lodge Centre Memorial Foundation or a charity of their choice.
