Muriel Collins (nee Ebbern) was born in Oak Bluff, MB and was a 1934 -1935 graduate of the old Normal School, corner of William and Gertie Street. First year near Cypress River at a one room school, then later, 20 years with St. James School Board formed her teaching career. Our mother, a widow for 36 years was 90 years young and led a very active life. Four children, eleven grandchildren plus seventeen great grandchildren added to her pleasure of living. She was on the Board of Sturgeon Creek United Church for many years. Other activities included A.D.K., Retired Teachers and the Canadian Club. She was a member of Citizens' Advocacy, an organization that helps retarded people for the last twenty-five years. Helping pregnant girls and arranging scholarships are an example of her busy agenda. For fun, Mom traveled. If she couldn't find someone to go with, she remembers strangers are just people you haven't met and away she went. She has participated in Elderhostel activities, especially held in locations all across Canada. Other travels include Australia, New Zealand, China, Greece, Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, South Africa and the Arctic as well as Alaska and the Yukon. Last January 2005 she went to Cuba. On January 28, 2006, we celebrated Mom's 90th birthday in Kelowna BC. All her family came to celebrate her life. A birthday dinner, then an open house on Sunday with relative and friends she had made over the years in Kelowna. Mom had a way of making people feel special. She was predeceased by her husband George Sidney Collins; granddaughter Yvonne Collins; daughter-in-law Betty Ann Collins and sister Evelyn Jonnason. She is survived by and will be cherished in the hearts of her children, Gary, Richard (Julia), Gail Osborn (Don), David; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; brother Keith Ebbern and sister Mildred Hatch. Pallbearers are her grandchildren Lori Jakins, Scott Osborn, Christine Scott, Shelley Lanz all of Kelowna BC, Steven Osborn (Grande Prairie, AB), Nicole Coulter (Uxbridge, ON), Darren and Amanda Collins (Toronto, ON) and Jody Collins (Victoria, BC). Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive with Rev. Bill Corkum officiating.
