Date of Passing: Feb 27, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN PHILLIPS It is with very heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather Norm on February 27, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Peggy, with whom he shared almost 52 years of marriage. He also leaves children, Russ, Joyce, Marion and Lawrence; and his much beloved grandchildren, Jeffrey, Laura, John, and Heather. Norm was predeceased by his mother Mary and father Harry. Born in Winnipeg on October 17, 1928, Norm spent a brief time with the Royal Canadian Air Force, he then undertook Engineering at the University of Manitoba before finding his way into drafting with the Dominion Bridge Company. A steady influence and mentor over his 37 years with the Bridge he retired as Superintendent of the Steel Service Centre in 1990. In his youth Norm was an accomplished model airplane builder and maintained a penchant for modeling throughout his life. A lifelong resident of St. Vital, he enjoyed the many lasting friendships he had; from his school years at Glenlawn Collegiate to, more recently, his Thursday morning breakfast group at Smitty's on Meadowood. Norm loved puttering in his yard, enjoying the nature and birds who frequented the feeders. He was a creative talent, forever fixing something or building a project in the basement. He also loved his weekend getaways with the family at their trailer at Ingolf and in later years at Falcon Lake. His greatest passion was singing. He was an accomplished baritone whose voice graced hundreds of venues. From an early start with the All Saints boy's choir and later, Sea Cadets Band, to weddings and funerals; to Eastern Star gatherings and even the World Curling Championships, Norm's voice moved many. He was an originating member of the Vitalizers; a group that entertained in Winnipeg and across the province for more than 30 years. Among his favourite occasions of song was annually leading the national anthem and Scottish numbers at the St. Andrew's Society dinner held each November. Not only will Norm's voice be long remembered, but so will his loving ways. He was a caring neighbour and friend and gave of his time unselfishly. He had a great sense of humour, and was forever reciting a short joke or limerick, much to Peggy's chagrin. His quick wit and laughter was evident, even in his final days. He will also be remembered for his dedication, kindness, and compassion. Poppa was devoted to his family; he gave of himself tirelessly and asked of nothing in return. Norm was a loving person and he expressed his care and concern readily. His gift of song and his hugs will be missed by his friends and family, as well as his Eastern Star brothers and sisters. Norm taught us all many things; respect, kindness, honesty, and integrity. He was a friend to many and struck up conversations and friendships easily. This was most evident these past couple of years as he underwent treatment at CancerCare and St. Boniface Hospital. He was quick to strike up a conversation and within minutes had not only given encouragement and hope to another cancer patient but had found a new companion for his journey. We were blessed to have had him in our lives as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. We will miss him forever. At Norm's request, cremation has taken place. The family would like to thank so many special and caring health care providers at St. Boniface Hospital, CancerCare, and especially the staff at Riverview 3E for their wonderful care and compassion. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Music Festival, #288 St. Anne's Rd. Wpg. MB R2M 2Y7, to establish a bursary in Norm's memory. Cheques should be made payable to the Winnipeg Music Festival, noting the Norman Phillips Memorial Bursary . God Bless you Norm, Dad, Poppa. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Rd, Winnipeg with Rev. Russell Wardell officiating. Private interment will occur at St. Vital Cemetery at a later date. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
