SHEILA SHAPIRO It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Joy (Syma Joyce) Shapiro (née Shapera) on Thursday, February 2, 2006 at the Seven Oaks Hospital. Predeceased by her husband, Jack, in August 2004, Mum leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Sandra, son Cory, his wife Goldelyn, her granddaughters Elisabeth, Melissa and Jessica, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Izzy and Shirley Shapiro and Harry and Ros Shapiro, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born in 1929, Mum's life was not always easy. She lost her father (Conrad) in 1948. Tragically, her brother (Hershey) drowned at Winnipeg Beach in 1954, and her mother (Shirley) passed away in 1955. Mum and Dad began their lives together on October 28, 1956. Dad's parents quickly adopted Mum and loved her more like a daughter than a daughter-in-law. Mum was now blessed with a second family. Mum has always loved her two children, but her greatest joy in life was her granddaughters. Elisabeth, Melissa and Jessica were her shining stars and she cherished every single second she spent with them. Mum was a fighter. She met many physical and emotional challenges with grace and courage. She beat breast cancer in 1988, and in December 2005 she was once again declared free of cancer. Mum spent this past year living at the Sharon Home on Magnus Avenue. She made many new friends there and especially enjoyed her time spent playing bingo and her conversations with Rabbi Neil Rose. Under his spiritual care, Mum gained a new appreciation and experienced a deeper love of her faith. We would like to thank Rabbi Rose and the staff at the Sharon Home for the excellent care they gave Mum. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 3, 2006 at Etz Chayim with interment at B'Nay Abraham Cemetery. Pallbearers were: David Shapiro, David Shapera, Jason Palansky, Harry Schwartz, Michael Tessler and Howard Jesierski. Special thanks to Rabbi Henry Balzer and Cantor Tracy Kasner Greaves for the beautiful service. For people who wish to make a donation in Mum's memory, contributions to CancerCare Manitoba or The Sharon Home would be greatly appreciated.
