GEORGE PETER WOLLNER B.Sc., (Hons.), M.Sc., M.D. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of George Wollner, beloved husband, son-in-law, uncle, great uncle, friend and colleague on March 2, 2006. He will be sadly missed by the love of his life, his wife Margaret. By his mother-in-law, Patricia Harvey. By his nieces and nephews, Christine (Ken) Malanchuk, Tricia (Dave) Lewis, Christopher (Melinda) Patts and Erin Patts. Great-nieces and nephews, Jessica, Adam, Summer and Willem. His sister-in-law Rae (Ed) Patts. Predeceased by his mother and father, Arpad and Hedwig Wollner, whom he missed dearly and his father-in-law George W. Harvey. George was born in Vrutky, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia) on April 22, 1948 to Arpad George and Hedwig Magdalena Wollner. They fled Czechoslovakia (Slovakia) for political reasons and eventually arrived in Canada in 1952. After spending some time in Toronto, they settled in Winnipeg, living in Fort Rouge and then later Fort Garry. He had attended Viscount Alexander School and later Vincent Massey Collegiate. He then proceeded on to the University of Manitoba where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1970 and his Masters in Chemistry in 1971. During this time he met his wife Margaret. He then went into the Faculty of Medicine graduating in 1975. As a physician he practiced a short time at the Misericordia Hospital before joining the St. Boniface Clinic in 1976. He also practiced as an Admitting Physician at the Tache Nursing Centre for many years. He continued to practice medicine at the St. Boniface Clinic until his retirement in September 2005. He was respected and well liked by all his patients for the care he gave them and the special interest he took in them both professionally and personally. Many of his patients continued to keep in contact with him through cards, letters, phone calls and emails. Their home especially had loving memories of the Hungarian cooking and baking as well as the cards, mementos and gifts given to them that they treasure to this day. They have been blessed with a large number of friends which they have enjoyed as family. Margaret and George married on July 14, 1973 and enjoyed a life of travel and companionship. Together they built a home in Kelowna and in their retirement, Margaret and George were finally able to move in to their dream home. George loved to garden, tending to his roses and had plans to resurrect his extensive model railway collection once again. Special thank you to the quick response from the Fire and Paramedic Services. A man is measured by the family who loved him, life long and new friends. In this respect, George and I have been truly blessed Prayers will be held on Monday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Hungarian Roman Catholic Church, 365 Burnell St. with Rev. Fr. Michael Stack and Rev. Fr. Stan Gacek presiding. Entombment in Assumption Chapel Mausoleum. • Dr Wollner was my physician for more then 20 years. His charm and caring nature was the essence of the man. Always interested in a good conversation or a good joke. I was very happy for him when he retired. I am so deeply saddened and I offer my love to all his family and especially to you Margaret. - Posted by: Gary Slipec Slipec (Family) on: Mar 07, 2006

  • I was very sad to hear of your loss. As a patient of his for over 25 years, I had really missed him when he retired. The only shining thought was that you were finally in your new home and enjoying each other's company in your retirement. He is gone far too soon. Our prayers are with you. A mass will be said in his name. Bryon and I offer our sincerest condolences. - Posted by: Joselyn Burvill (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2006
