Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDERICK THOMAS HENRY ASHLEY Frederick Thomas Henry Ashley, aged 86, died peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC. on Thursday, March 2, 2006. Fred was predeceased by his wife Phyllis in July 2005. Fred was born December 4, 1919, in Marbury, Cheshire, England, to the late Harold Randall Ashley and Rhoda Mary Ashley (nee Hancock) and was raised by his uncle Wilf in Whitchurch. He began his working life in the dairy industry as a cheese maker but in 1940 Fred enlisted in the Royal Air Force. He served in London during some of the heaviest raids of the war and subsequently with the Commonwealth Air Training Command in Canada. Upon returning to England he met Phyllis, who was also serving in the RAF. Following the war, Frederick joined the National Fire Service and began raising his family of three children, Christopher, Anthony and Jean. In 1957 the Ashley family immigrated to Canada to settle in Winnipeg. Upon retirement, Fred and Phyllis moved to Victoria. Frederick is lovingly remembered by his family - son Christopher (Winnipeg) and grandchildren Caroline and Chris; his son Anthony and his wife Valerie (Ottawa) and grand-daughter Jennifer; his daughter Jean (Nanaimo) and children Cherrel, Ian, Thomas, Cyndi, Sandi, Krysta; and several great-grandchildren. Fred will always be remembered as a happy go lucky guy who would always go that extra mile to help his family and friends. He was, and will always be, the best dad and granddad. He will be sorely missed by us all but now he goes to rest with the love of his life, Phyllis. We would like to thank Dr. Stanwood and the staff of the hospitals that took such good care of Dad during his period of declining health. Sincere appreciation is also sent to the staff of Juan de Fuca Home Support who took care of Mom and Dad over the past years and to Veterans Affairs Canada for providing such wonderful support. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC. A memorial service will follow at Sands Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. Fred and Phyllis will be interred at the Hatley Memorial Garden with future interment in England.
