Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN MALYK November 26, 1918 - March 4, 2006 It is with deep sadness that the family announces that our dear, wonderful Mother and Baba, Jean Malyk, passed away at peace at Seven Oaks Hospital on March 4, 2006, after succumbing to pneumonia and a progressive palsy which in recent years stole away her independence, but not her spirit. Jean was predeceased by her husband Nick Malyk and sisters, Mary Russell of Brandon and Tina Baduik of Winnipeg and nieces, Charlotte, Betty and Cornelia. Jean was born in Brandon on November 26, 1918 to parents, Michael and Annie Dankewich. Jean moved to Winnipeg where she met and married Nick Malyk in 1941. Jean and Nick settled on a small farm in North Kildonan where Jean was the loving homemaker and hard working farm wife, alongside her husband. Jean will remain forever in the hearts and minds of her children, Michael (and friend Doris) and Ken (and wife Deborah) and granddaughter Jenessa. Also left to mourn her are nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and relatives in the Ukraine. Jean nurtured and maintained all Ukrainian traditions with her family especially during orthodox Christmas and Easter celebrations. After raising her family, Jean worked at the Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Tribune, as well as volunteering briefly at Oseredok (Ukrainian Culture and Education Centre). Jean was an avid volunteer and supporter of church activities when she attended services at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Michaels with her family. Jean made two trips to visit relatives on both sides of the family in the Ukraine in the 1980's. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Seven Oaks Hospital who provided Jean with emergency care. Thanks to the staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, for providing Jean with daily care during her residence there since July 2002. At HFH, Jean enjoyed all the activities available, including the weekly family night concerts, weekly church services in Ukrainian, as well as other cultural, seasonal and holiday activities. She especially liked being taken to see the flowers and shrubs in the HFH park. Jean was keenly watching and listening to Ukrainian concerts, movies and music on video and cassettes throughout the winter. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W 1T9. Memorial service to be held on Friday, March 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St. with Rev. Mark Whitehead presiding. Vichnaya Pam'Yat Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
