ROBERT HARVEY SMITH On Monday, March 6, 2006 at the age of 87 years, following a lengthy illness, Harvey Smith of Crystal City, MB passed away peacefully at the Rock Lake Personal Care Home, Pilot Mound. He was predeceased by Jean, his devoted wife of 62 years, on April 28, 2005. He is survived by three daughters, Allison (David Weagle), Barb (Jim Cannons) and Leigh; and two sons, Wally (Joyce) and Jamie (Carol). He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Lynne (Peter), Robert (Julia), Jillian (Ryan), Kevin, Blair and Janis. He will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, and by friends and neighbours as well. Dad was born July 14, 1918 and attended the Rollins District School and Crystal City High School. On October 15, 1942, Dad married Jean Isobel Wallace of Londesboro District. They were stationed in Trenton, ON as Dad had previously joined the R.C.A.F. as part of the Second World War effort. In October, 1945, Dad and Mom returned to the Smith family farm south of Crystal City where they resided until 1994, at which time they moved into town. In addition to farming, Dad worked in the plumbing and heating trade, owning and operating his own business. Eventually, time constraints forced Dad to concentrate on only one occupation. A true farmer at heart, Dad chose to sell the plumbing and heating business in 1967. As a result, he was able to channel his energies into trying new crops and farming techniques. Dad's passion for the land persisted well into his retirement years and he continued to help his son, Wally, with the farm work and seed plant operation. Over the years, Dad maintained close ties with his wartime friends and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served as District, then Zone Commander and was installed as a lifelong Honorary Member. The affiliation with the Legion allowed Dad and Mom to travel to many regions of Canada - an opportunity they both welcomed and treasured. Dad's love of music was clearly apparent. As one of the original Crystal Ramblers , Dad played the drums for the band whose dance music was a source of entertainment for those in the community and surrounding areas. Dad was also a participant in the Pilot - Louise Band (playing the sousaphone) and he sang with the Crystal City United Church Choir. He thoroughly enjoyed all Rainbow Stage productions and other musical theatre venues. As a sports enthusiast, Dad was a competitive curler, enjoying success in zone playdowns and the MCA bonspiel. Dad was also involved in minor hockey, and spearheaded the need for artificial ice in both the local hockey and curling arenas. Dad will be remembered for his strong work ethic, honesty, integrity, and firm and steadfast convictions. He consistently demonstrated dedication to his family and pride in his country. Sincere thanks are extended to the staff of the Rock Lake Personal Care Home in Pilot Mound for the kindness and care shown to Dad over the many years. The thoughtfulness and concern has been truly appreciated. Cremation has already taken place. A private family service will be held on Monday, March 13 to honour Dad's memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Graham's Funeral Home of Pilot Mound is in charge of arrangements. At the Gate of the Year I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. And he replied, Go into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way. So I went forth and finding the Hand of God Trod gladly into the night. He led me toward the hills And the breaking of light in the lone east. - M.L. Haskins
