LILY DUBOWITS Our mother and Grandma lived a long, full and wonderful life. She was born in 1907 to the Semeniuk family in Narol. She was educated at Gonor School and moved to Winnipeg for employment at a young age. When she was 20 she met a special someone , Alex Dubowits, and after a brief courtship, they married and settled in Chicago. Three years later they returned to Gonor where they purchased a farm and became market gardeners. Mother loved the land and never complained of hard work. She was an accomplished seamstress and a wonderful cook. A lifelong member of Holy Trinity Church in Gonor, her church was important to her. Travelling south every winter with our Dad brought her much joy. After his passing, Mother, aged 62, obtained her driver's license and Portage and Main was her favourite intersection. Some of her happiest work times were spent at Government House, where she was employed as a cook for Lieutenant Governor Jack McKeag and his family. Her love of the sun drew her south for many enjoyable winter vacations with her lady friends. A trip to the British Isles, with her daughter Connie, was a cherished experience. After her husband's passing, she made her home in Lockport with her daughter Diana and son-in-law Eddie. She loved to play cards and bingo, lounge on her swing and spend Wednesday afternoons at The Club . With age taking its toll, she accepted the move to Betel Home in Selkirk two years ago. The last survivor of 11 children, she leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Dolores (Franz Dykstra) of Victoria, BC, Diana (Eddie Darichuk) of Lockport, Connie (Stephen Porter) of Niagara Falls, Carolyn (Leslie Dubowits) of St. Andrews; grandchildren Holly Van Gaalen, Teddy (Laurie) Kuzemski, Nancy (Bryan) Dewson, Edward Darichuk Jr., Marilyn (Ken) Eichen, Leanna (Paul) Loewen, David (Lisa-Ann) Dubowits, Melissa Dubowits; great-grandchildren Jesse (Lisa) Van Gaalen, Kayla and Jenna Kuzemski, Michelle Dewson, Evan and Elise Eichen, Luke and Graham Loewen; great- great-grandchild T.J. Van Gaalen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers will be sung on Sunday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, March 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 6297 Henderson Hwy (Gonor, MB) with Father Peter Chorney and Father Richard Soo, SJ officiating. Interment to follow in the Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Dubowits, Paul Loewen, Bryan Dewson, Herb Dubowits, Randy Todd, and Leonard Dehn. If friends so desire, donations in Lily's memory may be made to the Betel Home Foundation, 212 Manchester Ave., Selkirk, MB, R1A 0B6. The family wishes to thank the staff of Betel Home for the wonderful care they gave our mother and for the support and caring to our family, especially during her final days. She was a strong woman with a zest for life, a generous heart and a tremendous love of family. We will miss her dearly. Vichnaya Pamyat Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
