YOSHIMARU ABE Peacefully on Thursday, March 9, 2006, Yoshimaru Abe, surrounded by family, passed away at his home at the age of 91. Left to cherish his memory is Yoshi, his loving wife, of 64 years; his son Kazu of Vancouver (Leslie), daughters, Yumi Falk (Jack), Miki Stewart (Ken), Amy Murray (Ken) and Yuri. Dad will also be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, Yoshimaru was born on March 24, 1914, in Fukuoka, Japan, arriving in Vancouver at the age of 13. He later met and married Yoshi Homma in 1942. After the outbreak of the Second World War and following the internment of Japanese Canadians, Dad and his young family then were relocated to Manitoba. In 1953 he formed a business partnership with close friends and Fuji Builders became a well known custom home builder. Building cottages at Lake of the Woods gave him the opportunity to develop a special appreciation and love of nature. He had a profound respect for all living creatures. He was very active in the Japanese Canadian community, serving as a President of the Manitoba Buddhist Temple; helping to create the Japanese Canadian Cultural Center, designing, constructing and maintaining the Japanese garden at the Center, editing the Japanese edition of the Outlook for 50 years, and creating and building the garden and teahouse at the Japanese Pavilion at Folklorama. Dad received many prestigious awards for his contributions to community service. He had a great passion for the arts and was a writer, painter, poet and actor. Dad was a man of great integrity, honesty, and compassion. He showed through example his commitment to his family, community and faith. The family would like to thank Doctors Cavett and Hamilton for their kindness and care of our dad. We would also like to give a heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team who ensured that Dad was comfortable and supported at home. Dad's desire to stay at home would not have been possible without them. Funeral Service with take place at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 13 at the Manitoba Buddhist Church, 825 Winnipeg Ave. with Rev. Ulrich officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
