Born: May 14, 1921
Date of Passing: Mar 10, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryERIKA MARTHA MARIA HOMMEL (nee JUNGHANNS) Peacefully on March 10, 2006, Erika passed away at Golden Links Lodge. She will be sadly missed by her husband John; daughter Christine (David) Bell; son Harald (Cynthia); and grandchildren, Andreas and Alanna. Erika was born in Hannover, Germany, on May 14, 1921, and baptized into the Lutheran faith on May 29, 1921. She was predeceased by her parents, Johannes and Dorette; brother Hermann in infancy; and sisters, Mali and Anni. In her early career, Erika apprenticed and advanced in the business of sophisticated women's clothing, where she took delight in serving many opera divas of the day. During the war, she was engaged in work for the social welfare of children and families in various locations across Germany. Erika also faithfully served her church throughout her life. Through the sponsorship of Lutheran World Relief, Erika immigrated to Canada with John and Christine in October 1951, arriving on the converted freighter; Beaverbrae to the port of Quebec City. They continued their adventure by train to Winnipeg, where they made their home for the past 55 years. Erika treasured her children and grandchildren, and was always passionate about nature - birds, animals and wildflowers. She also loved the summer holidays spent in Kenora, long walks in King's Park, and relaxing in the cool shade of her garden. Erika thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Kingston and Quebec City, and through the mountains to Vancouver Island. Trips back to visit family in Germany in later years made for many beautiful memories. Sincere thanks to her gentle and loving caregivers at Golden Links Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief or the Alzheimer Society. A celebration of Erika's life will be held on Thursday, March 16, 1:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, McCalman and Grey. Arrangements entrusted to: VOYAGE FUNERAL HOME 1531 Pembina Hwy. 284-7500
