SHIRLEY MARINA UBELL (nee KUTZ) It is with the utmost sorrow we announce the passing of Shirley Marina Ubell at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care at the age of 71, on March 15, 2006, after a 10 year valiant fight with cancer. Shirley is survived in Winnipeg by her son Grant, daughter Janice Knight (Donald), in Toronto sons, Lance (Sheila) and Cameron (Michelle); four grandsons, Derek Knight, Scott and Colin Ubell, Caidan Ubell; two granddaughters, Kate Knight and Celeste Ubell; and Shirley's only sibling Larry (Edna) in Gimli. She was predeceased by her father in 1989, mother in 2005, her beloved husband George (2001), and two brothers-in-law, Ron Black and Bill Taylor. Shirley was born on February 10 1935, in Elrose, SK, daughter of Emil and Marie Kutz (nee Marchand). She left Rosetown at the age of 15 to attend Mt. Sinai Academy in Saskatoon SK, graduating in 1953. She then attended the Robertson Business College for a one year professional secretarial diploma. She went on to work as Personal Assistant to the head of Revenue Canada in Saskatoon. Shirley met the love of her life George, in Saskatoon and they were married February 19, 1955. They moved the very next day to Winnipeg, and for over 30 years Shirley was a loyal partner in the family business that thrived with the hard work and customer care she and George put into it. Shirley was always entertaining business guests, friends and family. Her most treasured possessions, besides her family, was her extensive recipe collection. A great day for Shirley was preparing for a dinner party. Our family would like to thank our very special friends for all their prayers, phone calls and visits during this past year. Our thanks to Dr. M. Shnider, Dr. Lotocki, Dr. P. Daeninck, Dr. J. Pilkey and Dr. F. Crow for their wonderful care and compassion. Thank you to all the special angels in the Cancer Care Unit, especially Val, Sheri and Gina and all the caring nurses in the Palliative Care Unit who treated Shirley with the utmost care, respect and dignity. Thank you to Fr. Barry Schoonbaert for his compassionate spiritual guidance for Shirley's last journey. A tremendous thank you to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Staff for their daily visits during the past year. Shirley was truly blessed to be in the care of Louise Dansereau and Mark Shepherd. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Barry Schoonbaert at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. (corner of Grant and Roblin) on Saturday, March 18 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Pallbearers will be Robert Bockstael, Conrad Wyrzykowski, Larry Kutz, Andrew Ainley, Don and Derek Knight. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation, Palliative Care Fund, Room D1008, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6.
