HELEN CHAMBERS BURTON (nee STIRLING) April 18, 1914 - March 15, 2006 On Wednesday, March 15, 2006, Helen passed away at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 91 years. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Margaret Lawson (Dwayne) of Winnipeg; son Hugh (Cheryl) of Canmore, AB; grandchildren, Christopher Lawson and Katie Lawson. She was predeceased by her husband Trevor; parents, Ernest and Pearl Stirling (nee Chambers) and sister Margaret Nothersall-Parkinson. Helen was born in Moose Jaw, SK. and grew up in Pennant, SK. She trained at Toronto Western Hospital and graduated as a R.N. in 1937. The war years saw Helen serving as a WREN, stationed in St. Hyacinthe, QC and Halifax, NS. It was in Halifax that she met and married Trevor. They were transferred to Winnipeg in 1953 and resided in St. James. In Winnipeg, Helen nursed at Deer Lodge Hospital and in later years worked in the reference department of the St. James Library. Her volunteer work included Division Commissioner for Strathcona Division Girl Guides of Canada, 25 years with Meals on Wheels and working with the library committee of Deer Lodge United Church. Helen's passions were her grandchildren, walking, bridge, reading and spending time at her family cottage on Georgian Bay. Helen's funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. in Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave. (near Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue). For those who wish, parking will be available in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church parking lot located on Ness Avenue. The family would like to thank the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to the Alzheimer Society or to a charity of your choice.
