RUBIN THAU Rubin Thau passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the Louis Brier Home in Vancouver, on March 11, 2006, at the age of 96. He was predeceased by his wife, Freda, in 1995. He is survived by his children, Chana Thau and Michael Eleff, Isaac and Judy Thau, Gail Thau and Reuben Potash; and his grandchildren, Daniel, David and Maya Thau-Eleff, Elana and Jonathan Thau, Talia and Leah Potash. Rubin was born in 1909 in Zablotov, Galicia. He managed to survive two world wars, arriving in Palestine in 1944, where he was reunited with his sister Rebeka and her husband Yona Mayer. He immigrated to Winnipeg in December 1947 and married Freda Yurman in January 1948. They were married for 47 years, raising their three children. He had tremendous affection for his garden, for birds and for automobiles. Rubin had a great love of Judaism and Israel. His crowning passion was his grandchildren: he adored all seven of them and had a special relationship with each and every one of them. He had a gift for languages and a warm, outgoing manner that allowed him to connect with people quickly and easily. This enabled him to make new friends when he moved to Vancouver at the age of 88. He was also fortunate to have a wonderful companion, Remy, who not only took care of him but truly cared for him. The family thanks her, Dr. Peter Lutsky and the staff of the Louis Brier, his last home. His end was as it should have been, in the fullness of years, with his children nearby, in familiar surroundings and without pain. In his last weeks, he spoke of going home, and he has. We will miss him terribly. Donations in Rubin's memory may be made to the Louis Brier Home, 1055 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver, V6M 1W9 or to the Holocaust Education Centre at the Jewish Heritage Centre, C-116 123 Doncaster Street, Winnipeg, MB R3N 2B2.

I wish there was an opportunity when I could have met Rubin. My father (also born) in Zablotow would likely have known Rubin, albeit 10 years younger. It would have been interesting to know how close was their relationship in that small Shetl. No doubt Rubin was a righteous mensch given he had such a long life, and may the family live on well in his blessed memory. I wish there was an opportunity for me to have known Mr. Rubin Thau. My father (Chaim Thau), also born in Zablotov Glacia, was about 10 years younger than Rubin, but I am sure they must have known each other. I am sad to hear about Rubin's passing, but wish the family all the best in his blessed memory. Jeff Thau - Posted by: Jeff Thau (Unknown) on: Jan 29, 2013
