Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMIKE KONCUR April 24, 1933 - March 20, 2006 It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and friend Mike on Monday, March 20, 2006 Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 47 years, Olivia; son Michael (Deanna); daughter Melanie (Darren) and grandson Raine, who was the apple of his eye. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Michaelina. Mike grew up and lived in Winnipeg's north end all his life, and was very interested and knowledgeable of the history of that part of the city. In his early years he was active in sports, excelling in soccer and football at Isaac Newton High School in the 1950s. He was employed with the Canadian National Railway from 1951 to 1996 as a machinist and retired following 45 years of service. His boyhood idol, George Gordienko, was an inspiration to Mike and prompted him to become a wrestler, bodybuilder and weightlifter. After winning the Manitoba heavyweight weightlifting championship from 1958 to 1960 (well known as Iron Mike ), he decided to enter semi professional wrestling until the late 1950s. In the year 2000 he was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame. Mike had many outstanding qualities such as being responsible, honest, helpful, reliable, and friendly and once he befriended you, you had a friend for life. Mike had a love for all animals especially for his two poodles Bear and Sonny, who will miss him very much. One of Mike's pleasures in his retirement years was meeting his friends for breakfast at Eddie's, Salisbury House and Thunder Bird Restaurant, discussing sports, politics and old time movies. Another passion was shopping and buying gifts for his many friends. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Rev. Fr. M. Kouts as officiant. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Walter Williams, Rick Keach, Dennis Shymko, Joe Boyko, Leo Luch, and Russell Luch In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to a charity of ones choice.
