Date of Passing: Mar 22, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROY SANDNESS (DON CARTER) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our brother-in-law, uncle and dear friend. Roy passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Valley Eldercare Home in Grand Forks, ND. Roy met Alda (Bjarnason) in the 1950s while he was a pilot with the R.C.A.F. They fell in love during his tour in Gimli but didn't marry at that time due to Alda's commitment to caring for her parents. However they carried on a long distance romance over the years until he retired from Delta Airlines and they could set up house and get married. Roy was an interesting man who had many stories to tell about his years as a bush pilot in Northern British Columbia and flying jets with the R.C.A.F. from Ottawa to Gimli to the Antarctic. While flying for Delta Airlines he was based in Atlanta, Boston and Miami and flew to many exotic locales including Cuba before the revolution! Roy loved nature and animals. His favourite time of year was autumn and the beautiful colours of the leaves. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and flying his float plane to his cabin at Mitchell Lake, BC. He and Alda so enjoyed going for rides and their picnics at Camp Morton and Hecla Island. And of course they both loved Louie the cat ; top that off with a beer and a chat with Roger out at the garage, and life couldn't get much better! Roy will be lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Inga Isfeld and Anna O'Brien; Burma and Doug Hambly who cared for him and his affairs after his stroke and their sons Garth and Kristinn (Brenda and Morgan); his dear friends Roger and Pam Furgala and their children Mallory and TeeJay; also by Alda and Don Kotz, Pat and Ralston Ayling, Mike and Debbie O'Brien, Tim and Nancy O'Brien, Kathy and Baillie Davies, David, Roy and Heidi Thorarinson, Diane and Jack Gowenlock, Jona and Reg Nedo, Richard and Sheila Bjarnason, Herbert and Urma Bjarnason and by all of their children. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Alda and Louie in 2000 and by his mother Alison Carter in 2004. We would sincerely like to thank his good friends Dan and Raedene Erickson of Abbotsford, BC for all the care and support they gave him while he was hospitalized there. Also a thank you to Kathy Reeve of Abbotsford - M.A.S. Hospital and Helen Hutton, Glen, Susan and all the staff at Valley Eldercare who cared for him with such kind compassion. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
