HELENA W. MACDONALD Helena Wilhelmina MacDonald passed away March 25, 2006 at Red Deer, AB in her 96th year. She was born September 12, 1910 to Dutch immigrant parents, John and Helena Holtslag. She is survived by son Gary and Connie MacDonald of Red Deer, their daughters, Adelle (Rich), Denise, Melissa and Allison; daughter Arlene and Reinhold Fehler of Wolseley, SK, their sons Jason (Lisa) and Chris; three great- grandchildren; brother Van of Carman, MB; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Melville in 1983, three brothers and two sisters. Except for six months in Sudbury, ON after the war, she resided in Manitoba until moving to Red Deer in 1985. In 1949, Helena and Mel began 26 years as owners/operators of the Sentinel Courier in Pilot Mound. In 1976, they were awarded honorary life memberships in Manitoba Community Newspapers Association. Helena was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary for over 20 years and a school trustee. Helena edited the District Reunion booklet in 1964 and was a director of the Pilot Mound Housing Committee. Helena supported her children's hockey and music interests. She enjoyed playing bridge and curling. From Red Deer, she kept in touch with friends in Manitoba and appreciated calls and letters, especially at her 90th birthday. Her enjoyment of bridge continued in Red Deer and she joined the Legion as an associate voting member. Cremation, with graveside service and interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Pilot Mound at a later date. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to a charity of their choice.
