Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBARRIE ALBERT NOONAN Suddenly, of heart failure, at his Winnipeg condo, March 3, 2006, aged 65. Predeceased by his beloved wife Pat (1996), survived and mourned by his sisters, Karen, Nora and Phyllis of the London area, ON, brothers-in-law, Bruce of Vernon and Keith of Toronto, their spouses and families. Barrie will also be greatly missed by the Bailey family, particularly godson Stephen and wife Jennifer of Vancouver, goddaughter Barrie Jordan Janz of Edmonton, and the close friends and former colleagues who held him in much affection. Until retirement at his wife's death, Barrie Noonan was for many years Director of Student Counselling Services and a member of the Department of Psychology at the University of Winnipeg. Born in Ingersoll, ON, he held a BA (Hons), MA and MA Sc in Experimental and Applied Psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a PhD in Counselling Psychology, University of Alberta. His primary scholarly interests were the existential counselling of women and the philosophy of the Cynics. Barrie and Pat had a great love of travel which he maintained in his retirement, together with his avid taste for detective fiction, military and aviation history, and woodcarving. He continued to spend time at the farm in Beausejour that he and Pat so much enjoyed, as did their many visitors. Barrie had a strong sense of independence tempered by his distinctive wit and signature chuckle, his loyalty to friends and loved ones, and a quiet but bounteous generosity. Among the several organizations he supported by his donations and active service were the Manitoba Forestry Association and the Association of Community Living, Beausejour, of which he was a past Director and Vice-President. Cremation has taken place. A private family commemoration will be held later in the year. Memorial donations in Barrie Noonan's remembrance may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Diabetes Association. I remember Barrie's chuckles. Particularly when he and Pat and I were together in '63 and on when she and I were, and after we had finished "Libary" school as we called it. She, with her southern Ontario twang and classical Greek education, and me, from Winnipeg with a Fine Arts degree. Both barely admitted because our academic credentials were too specialized. Oddballs in a white WASP Torontonian environment. Wonderful! No wonder we gravited each other and to a nearby pub every Fri. night after the week's classes were over. Major memory: when she and I got called into the L-School's director's office and scolded because I had co-erced Pat into helping me serve wine at an artist's reception at the newly opened David Mirvish Gallery. And fondest memory: when I'd see Pat and Barrie's wonderful symbiotic and warm auras when they were together. I don't know who among their families and friends see this, but please know that when I found out today (April 9, 2014) that Barrie died, it brought back a tankard full of memories about both of them. I got an invite to a '64 reunion of our class in library school in old 'TO and asked any attendees to read my tribute to Pat and that's what started my search for Barrie, and which resulted in the tears on my cheeks as I type. May we all remember them with warmth and their presence in our lives. - Anne - Posted by: Anne Woodsworth (Friend) on: Apr 09, 2014
