JOHN (JACK) CY LAYE It is with great sorrow that we announce the unexpected, but peaceful passing of our beloved father Jack, at the Selkirk General Hospital on Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Dad will be greatly missed by his children, Selma (Allan) Coumont, Glen (Delores), Sheldon (Elaine) and Derek (Cindy). Dad's grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his life and in his heart. Grandpa / Papa / Old Papa will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Corrine, Leslie, Paul, Pam, Tammy, Jaclyn, Daniel, Evan, Alex, Kaitlin, Cherri, Garrett, Amy, Cameron and Amber; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dad will be especially missed by Linda Grant, who for the last few years, was responsible for the twinkle in his eyes, and the spring in his step. Jack is also survived by his sister Jean Kuzenko, brother-in-law Bob Sinclair and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Clara in 1998; sons Jack and Clifford in 1973 and grandchildren Summer in 1994 and Adam in 2002. Jack was born on November 24, 1918, one of seven children. At an early age, after marrying Clara, he joined the army and was eventually sent overseas. After being discharged, he returned to Selkirk, where he built his home and raised his family. Dad worked for North American Lumber for many years, and when he was in his 40's, he went to night school to get his carpenter's ticket. He then went to work for the Province of Manitoba Government Services, at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, retiring in 1983. Dad worked hard all his life, and he enjoyed his retirement immensely. He took the time to go fishing, and his carpentry skills were greatly appreciated by the work he then did for family and friends. Grandpa had a great love of music, as he was always entertaining the grandchildren with his fiddle during the holidays and at various Laye functions. In accordance with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, March 31 (today) at 1:00 p.m. in the Christ Anglican Church, Selkirk, with Rev. Brad Elliott officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Clement's Columbarium. The family would like to thank the staff at Woodland Courts, where Dad resided these last few years. Also, we cannot express how grateful we are to the doctors and nurses at the Selkirk General for the kindness and compassion shown to Dad and the family during his stay at the hospital. The hardest thing in life to bear, To want you Dad, and you're not there. With broken hearts, we whisper low, We love you Dad, and will miss you so! Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
