TED MARTIN March 24, 2006 It was in peaceful sleep that Ted Martin passed away on Friday, March 24, 2006 at Golden West Centennial Lodge in Winnipeg after a valiant struggle with many health issues over the past years. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joan; his sons, Jay (Angela) and Scott (Leigh Ann) and his grandchildren, Kayla and Brayden. Ted was born in Fort Erie, ON where he spent the first six years of his life. At the age of three, he took swimming lessons from Marilyn Bell and continued to enjoy his swimming most of his active years. At the age of six, his family moved to Fort William. While there, he spent his summers at Pioneer Camp in Lake of the Woods. He enjoyed all aspects of camp life, especially canoeing and boating. Upon his graduation from Fort William Collegiate Institute, Ted took a four year Honour degree program in Music Education at Western University in London, ON. He started his teaching career in 1968 in London and in 1970, he moved to Kenora to teach music and be back near Lake of the Woods. In Kenora, he taught music in both Lakewood and Beaver Brae Secondary School. He enjoyed working with all his Music Councils and traveling with his bands to participate in numerous festivals. He was honoured when one year his band was invited to play in Florida at various tourist attractions. He had many wonderful stories of his adventures with his music students and he took a keen interest in their lives above and beyond music. Ted enjoyed teaching in Kenora until 1991 when he went on Long Term Disability. He spent his next days cooking, gardening and rocking on the front porch of his Agate Bay home. In 1999, he and Joan moved to Winnipeg. He lived his last years in Deer Lodge Centre and Golden West Centennial Lodge. Ted especially enjoyed visits from his grandchildren, family and friends. A highlight was having Kayla accompany him to see the Nutcracker Ballet. Special thanks to the staff at Golden West who made his last days as comfortable as possible. Cremation has taken place and it was Ted's wish that there not be a funeral service. His family will celebrate his life at a later date at their camp on Leisure Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Ted Martin Music Scholarship Fund c/o Beaver Brae Secondary School, 1400 9th St. N., Kenora, ON, P9N 2T7. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway - 783-7211
