Walter was born on October 3, 1919, the eighth of eleven children born to Silas and Muriel Hill in Moose Jaw, SK. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen in 1981; his daughter, Jocelyn in 2006; sisters, Muriel, Margaret and Whilemina, and brothers, George, Frederick, Roland, Phillip, Sidney and Alfred. He is survived by his children, Peter (Jan), Michael, Patricia and Susan; his grandchildren, Joel (Jolene), Lindsay, Arynn and Daniel Walter; his brother Albert Frank and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was raised in Moose Jaw, and married Helen in 1944 while he was serving in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in England during the Second World War. In 1952, they moved the family to Brandon, where Walter delivered mail for Canada Post. Walter happily centered his life on his wife and children, who he loved unconditionally. He also loved speed skating, horses, the jungle , playing his cornet, sports and travelling. He made sure all his children learned to swim and to ride, had music lessons, and took Latin in school. He and Helen took the entire family on many trips in Canada and to England, Ireland, Holland, the U.S. and Mexico, whether or not school was in session. Walter was a genuinely kind and generous man who treated everyone with respect and truly enjoyed the people who inhabited his life. No matter when you showed up at Walter's house, there was always a place for you at the table, and a bed for you to sleep in. Walter was involved in the Salvation Army Band, Little League, Scouting, and Park Community Centre. He was a founding member of the Brandon chapter of the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded and of Westman Opportunities, Inc. and Handicapped Services. Before it was either popular or accepted, he was in the forefront of working for access to educational, recreational, housing and support services in the community for people with severe disabilities. The family thanks the staff at Dinsdale Personal Care Home and Dr. Englebrecht for the excellent care and personal attention they gave Walter over the past four years. Walter will be honoured at a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12 at the Salvation Army on 1st Street Princess Avenue, Brandon, MB.
