George was born September 7, 1922 in Winnipeg to Anna and Alex Kalinin. George enlisted at the age of 18 with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He was captured at Dieppe and endured many hardships during his three years in POW Camps before escaping to join the advancing Allied Forces. He remained active with the Militia for many years. George was married to his loving wife of 59 years, Cynthia, on November 4, 1946. He was employed by Air Canada in Winnipeg then Montreal for 28 years. He returned to Winnipeg after retirement but his love of the outdoors and delight in meeting new people led him to become a Crop Inspector for Manitoba Crop Insurance. George and Cynthia moved to the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in 1987 where he enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing and exploring, as he had in Manitoba and Quebec. He took great pleasure in carpentry and handyman projects using the skills learned in his youth while working with his father and brother as A. Kalinin and Sons, Winnipeg. George was friendly and outgoing, told wonderfully humorous stories, helped many people through the years, and loved animals. He was preceded in death by his youngest son Roy George, in 1994; his sister Vicki Rae and brother Ted. George will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Cynthia; son and hunting buddy, Roger; daughters, Diane (Rodger) Hayes of Delta, BC, Laura of Vernon, BC, Ronalee (Brian) Cripps of Reno, NV; sisters, Amy Boyd of Penticton, BC, Aida (Gus) Essenburg of Winnipeg; his boyhood friend Allen Franks of Winnipeg; his flying partner George Bray of Winnipeg; and other family members and friends. He will be lovingly remembered by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
