LILIAN POOLE Lilian Poole passed away April 9, 2006 at the Arborg and District Health Centre. Lilian was born in England in 1923 and came to Canada at the age of 21 years. She is loved and will always be remembered by her daughter Sandra Jacobson. Grandson Allan Jacobson (children Alanna and Carter), granddaughter Anita Jacobson. Son Allan, wife Cathy. Granddaughters, Zenith (son Jackson), Shelly (George) Batenchuk (children Andrew and Aiden), grandson Brian Poole (son Owen). Lilian is also survived by two sisters in England, Joan and Pam, Uncle Rodney and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and son-in-law Ray Jacobson. Lilian was the oldest of her family - her mother died when she was 12 years old. At that point, the family moved in with her Gran and there they stayed until they were grown. Lilian always spoke fondly of the happy times they spent with all her aunts and uncles and what a wonderful person her Gran was to provide such a good home for them all. During the Second World War, the family home in Hastings was taken over as a second defense of Hastings. A huge gun was put out the window and a large steel re-enforced table was put into the kitchen that they were told to hide under if needed. Lilian said she was not frightened during the war as she though it was great that there were so many soldiers around. A Canadian soldier caught her eye and she and Bill were married in 1943. Bill was wounded in France and returned to Canada followed by Lilian by December of 1944. She was one of over 40,000 war brides that came to Canada during and after the Second World War. She arrived in Halifax in the dead of winter and then took the train to Winnipeg and a new world awaited her here. Soon Allan and Sandra were born and a new life began in Canada. She and Bill lived in Winnipeg, Darlingford, Arborg and Stonewall. Lilian lived for a few years in Gimli where she enjoyed the company of her friends, Jessie, Mora, Gudrun and Anna. Anyone who had the privigele of knowing Lilian knew that although Canada was her home, part of her heart would always be in England. Sadly, she was never to see her Gran or her father again as they both died before she and Bill returned to England. Lilian was very much a homemaker. She loved her grandchildren and great-grand-children immensely - she always seemed to know what children were thinking and what they needed. She had a super green thumb - loved flowers and could grow anything. Generally in April or May she would still have a large poinsetta blooming in her livingroom. In fact, last Christmas she was hoping she wouldn't receive a poinsetta from anyone as she was just tired of the one from last year. She also made the best pie pastry, tea biscuits and Yorkshire pudding that any of us have ever tasted. She enjoyed watching Coronation Street and CNN, a glass of port wine before supper, listening to the radio and visiting on the telephone with her friends. Lilian never forgot a birthday or anniversary and always signed her cards With Love Always . She meant so very much to all of us and she will be dearly missed forever by her family. With Love Always to you Lilian - your family. Special thanks to chemo nurse, Julie Kumps at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Gimli, MB. Lilian enjoyed their visits and sharing stories of England. Thank you to Dr. Lional Mokate and the nursing staff at Arborg and District Health Centre, your care and compassion are greatly appreciated. A private family service will be held on Thursday, April 13. Arborg MacKenzie Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
