Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD JOHN HOWELKO Peacefully on Friday, April 7, 2006 at Selkirk General Hospital, with his family by his side, Edward John Howelko passed away at the age of 87 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his children, Joan Howelko (Reno Kohlmann); Doreen (Edward Alleyn) and their children, Thomas, David and Mary; Brian (Debbie) Howelko and their children, Tyler, Brittany and Christopher; Alan (Colleen) Howelko and their daughter May Lin; sister Isabel (Fred Le Reverend); brother Frank (Laura) Hewlko; sister Anne (Bill Edge); brother-in-law Herbert Dunn; as well as numerous other relatives and lifelong friends. Ed was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years Jean; sisters, Stella Dunn and Jean Dale and brother-in-law Arthur Dale. Ed was born on August 9, 1918 in Matlock, MB. He started his working career at North American Lumber in Winnipeg Beach, MB. Other than an early job working for Eaton's mail order delivering packages in the Gimli and Winnipeg Beach area, he spent most of his career in carpentry. He spent many years working at Bird Construction as a finishing carpenter on various buildings including Red River Community College, St. Stephen's United Church on Broadway and Holiday Towers North. He retired from Parks Canada in 1983 where he worked as a master carpenter. Some of the historic sites that Ed work on restoring are Lower Fort Garry, Riel House, St. Andrew's Rectory and York Factory in Manitoba and Fort Battleford and Motherwell Homestead in Saskatchewan. Ed was a very hard worker and extremely resourceful. If he didn't have the right tool for the job, he would make it. He enjoyed building everything, including their family home and many of its furnishings. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and blueberry picking and going for leisurely drives in the country complete with a stop for ice cream. His pallbearers will be Bill Edge Jr., Larry Hewlko, Michael Yanishewski, Fred Pedruchny, Rick Warner and Alan Howelko. Honorary pallbearers are Metro Pedruchny, Mike Miller and George Bilan. A celebration of Ed's life will take place on Thursday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Teulon with Fr. Gerald Langevin officiating. For those who wish, viewing will take place 30 minutes prior to Ed's service. Interment will follow at St. William's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Teulon in care of arrangements.
