LIONEL LEONARD HOULE With his family and friends at his bedside, Lionel Leonard Houle, passed away following a short illness on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the Ste. Rose General Hospital. Lionel was predeceased by his parents, Alice in 1951 and Jerry in 1990; his two brothers, Stanley in 1949 and Alfred in 1995 and his sister Edna Flett in 1999; his grandparents, Margaret and Pierre Houle, Maria and Jerry Thompson; his uncles, Pierre Houle Jr, Delorme Houle and Henry Houle; his aunts, Edith Flett, Mary Louise Houle, Sophia Houle and Pete and Louisa Mousseau; his two brothers-in-law, George D. Malcolm and Joe Whitford; and his nieces and nephews, Allison, Maureen and Darlene Malcolm, Peggy and Joe Jr Whitford, Erin Malcolm, Nicholas Maytwayashing and Joseph and Steve Flett. Lionel leaves to mourn his passing, his former wife Kathy Houle; his stepchildren, Derek and Tina, along with eight grandchildren all of Calgary, AB; his sons, Trevor and Anthony of Winnipeg; and his special granddaughter Allissa Belle of Winnipeg; two brothers, George Houle of Bacon Ridge and Russell Houle (Margaret) of Vogar; two sisters, Leona Malcolm and Gladys Whitford of Ebb Flow, Sally Cordell of Winnipeg who Lionel took as his mother as well as Mrs. Mary Flett of Winnipeg; his sisters-in-law, Joyce Houle of Ebb Flow, Beatrice Delorme of Winnipeg as well as extended family members, Lena Malcolm, Gertrude Flett and Brent Malcolm along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Lionel was born on January 29, 1948 at Ebb Flow, MB. He received his education at Hillridge School and completed his education in Cranberry Portage, MB. He went on to Brandon University where he received his Bachelor of Education degree. He taught at Waywayseecappo School for one year and then at Dufferin School in Winnipeg for 28 years. Lionel volunteered with young people to get them off of the streets and into safer homes. Lionel was awarded Certificates of Appreciation from numerous organizations in Winnipeg such as the United Way, Freight House, and the Friendship Centre of Winnipeg. With all of his many activities, Lionel still found time to work with various square dancing groups in the city. His many students who are all now adults had a lot of respect for Lionel. They still referred to him as Mr. Houle. He touched a lot of people throughout the years. Lionel worked for the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre of Winnipeg for 16 years. He did a lot of volunteer work for the centre. His dream was to have the Friendship Centre succeed for the benefit of people of all races. Lionel was the bingo manager at the centre for 14 years. He was a person worked from the heart along with being a full time teacher. His nieces and nephews considered him to be a big brother with a big heart. He spent his last Christmas with the family and had a gift for everyone. Lionel wanted to come home to Ebb Flow and be with all of his family until his passing. He had made sure that everything was taken care of before he passed away. Lionel always encouraged his students about the importance of an education. Your dreams of a career can be accomplished . He will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace. Prayers and wake service will be held on Tuesday, April 11, beginning at 6:00 p.m. from the residence of Leona Malcolm, Ebb Flow, MB. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Ebb Flow, MB, Fr. Norberto Monton will officiate with the interment following in the Ebb Flow Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Darrel Malcolm, Kelly Houle, Morris Houle, Melvin Flett, Robert Whitford and Wade Houle. Honorary pallbearers will be Lorena Flett, Yolanda Flett, Olga Houle, Lily Houle, Elaine Malcolm, Iris Desjarlais, Carmen Houle, Lily Swan, Glenda Whitford, Lena Malcolm and Gertrude Flett. Ste.
