MARY McCONN BESSETTE February 13, 1947 - April 10, 2006 Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Mary passed away at the Riverview Health Centre following a courageous three year battle with ovarian cancer. Mary was predeceased by her son Damien and her father Charlie. Left to mourn her passing, are her loving husband Gerry; her son Neil and his wife Michelle; her mother Kathleen McConn; her sisters, Catherine (Gerry), Theresa (Tom); her brothers Owen (Mary), Cathal (Aileen), David (Patricia), Dermot (Marie), and Robert (Sara); her sisters-in-law, Doreen (Bert), Mona (Steve), Paulette, Vivian (Bill); numerous aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, together with a wide circle of friends in Canada and Ireland. Born in Athleague, Co Roscommon, Ireland, Mary immigrated to Canada in 1969 to work as a lay missionary with the Legion of Mary in The Pas, MB and moved to Winnipeg in 1971 where she worked for a number of years in real estate before joining the Toronto Dominion Bank. Married to Gerry in 1975, Mary was a loving wife and devoted mother. Between her career and her family, Mary still made time for community involvement: spending many years on the executive of the Irish Association of Manitoba, becoming it's first female president from 1992 1994. Renowned for her generosity, her practical intelligence, her keen interest in people and famous hospitality, Mary loved life and lived it to the full until her untimely death. The family would like to thank all the staff at Cancer Care, St. Boniface Hospital and in particular Dr. Lotocki, as well as the caring staff at Riverview Health Centre. Ar Dheis De Go Raibh A Hanam Dilis. A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Thursday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Road, Winnipeg with Rev. Fr. Gerry Ward presiding. Interment will follow at the St. Boniface Cemetery. Friends may view at the E.J. Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St., Winnipeg on Wednesday, April 12 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Damien Bessette Scholarship Fund, in care of The Irish Association of Manitoba, 654 Erin Street, Winnipeg, MB R3G 2V9.
