SARAH JANE (IRENE) DOUGLAS Surrounded by her family on Friday, April 14, 2006, Irene Douglas passed away at the Middlechurch Home at the age of 82 years. She was predeceased by her husband James U. Douglas in 1975. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, George L. and his wife Joanne of Winnipeg and J. Wesley and his wife Diane of Toronto. She will also be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Margery Plewes of Winnipeg, her brother-in-law George Hains of England as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Northern Ireland, England and New Zealand. Educated in Armagh, Northern Ireland, She married Jim in Scotland in 1945 and came to Canada in 1946. Irene was a long time member of Gordon King Memorial United Church and was very active in the U.C.W. being a member of Unit 8 for over forty years. She was Past President and a life member of the I.C.W. Outside her church, one of her joys in life was membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, being an active of Jephthah Chapter #22 since 1954. She was Worthy Matron of her chapter in 1967, elected Grand Trustee in 1974 and elected Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Manitoba in 1979. She was appointed to General Grand Chapter Committee in 1994 to 1997. Irene was very active in the family business, St. John's Music and after her husband's death, assumed the position of President, retiring in 1989, passing the business to a third generation. Irene loved animals, especially her dogs and for many years was an active member of the Red River Terrier Club and served the club as President and Treasurer. She was a Life Member of the Red River Terrier Club and the Canadian Kennel Club obtaining an award for long service. She loved showing and training her dogs for the show ring and took great pride in their winnings. A memorial service will be held at the Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Douglas' memory may be made to the Osteoporosis Society of Canada, Manitoba Chapter or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Please bring a Tin for the Bin .
