HUGH LOUIS McVARISH April 19, 1917 April 17, 2006 With sadness the family of Hugh McVarish announce his death Monday, April 17, at the Concordia Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Angus and Emma, his sisters, Ida (at the age of four) and Irene, and his brother Wilfred. Hugh leaves to mourn Jeanne, his beloved wife of 61 years; daughters, Elaine (Ted) and Gail; grandchildren, Jen (Clare), Todd, Karen, Kathy and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner, Miranda and extended family Nicole, Justin and Dylan. He is also survived by his sister Evelyn and brothers, Leo (Eileen), Gil (Doris), Barney (Betty) and Dennis (Olga). Hugh will be missed by many other family members and numerous close friends. Hugh McVarish was born in Winnipeg on April 19, 1917. His artistic talent emerged early. As a young man he taught himself sandblasting through correspondence, which launched his career. He became a monument engraver by trade, and later developed his skills in glass etching. With his intricate lettering abilities and great sense of humour, Hugh found many ways to apply his talents, print making, silk-screening, producing signs and posters, and for a short time publishing a comic strip in the Winnipeg Record. Hugh was an exceptionally diverse and gifted artist. For many years he was a member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club. His paintings have adorned the walls of the Manitoba Club, Eaton's Gallery, Loch Gallery and the WAG, winning many juried art shows. Hugh was a charter member of the Adanac Woodcarving Club, as well as the Gens de Bois. On March 25, he received the Carver's Award of Excellence (crafted by Peter Sawatsky) in recognition of his achievement in promoting the art of carving in North America. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge, a mentor to countless people over the years. He will be remembered as a dear husband, and a caring father. He was an inspiring person and dear friend to all he knew. He will be greatly missed. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road. Anyone wishing to share a personal memory of Hugh is welcome to do so at this time.
