Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVELMA (FERN) BREMNER It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fern Bremner on Good Friday, April 14, 2006 in Winnipeg. Fern leaves to mourn her daughter Carol, her son Bill (Marilyn) and many other relatives and friends. Fern was born in Pendleton, Ontario on May 31, 1921 and grew up on a farm near Bristol, Quebec with her father Donald McPhee. She lost both her mother Jessie and her only sister Grace when she was young and was forever grateful to their neighbors, Nettie and Herman Ballantye, who served as her surrogate family. Fern took her teacher's training in Montreal and subsequently taught elementary school. One day, on the train, she met Charles who was serving with the Air Force in St. Hubert, Quebec. They married on August 2, 1943 and soon moved to Dauphin, Manitoba. Fern delighted in looking after her home, her family and her garden. After Bill and Carol were both in school, she started working part time at the local corner store and then went on to work at the Eaton's store, which later became Stylerite, where she continued to work until she was nearly seventy. It seemed that half of Dauphin passed through the notions department where Fern worked and she knew them all. Fern was also very active in the Baptist Church and participated in various roles over the years such as CGIT leader, deaconess and with the women's organizations. Both Fern and Charlie were involved in the formative years of the Dauphin Plains Credit Union where Fern served on the supervisory committee. In late 2002, Fern and Charlie moved to Winnipeg where they took up residence at the Assiniboine Links and made many new friends. The family would like to thank these friends as well as all of the staff at the Links for providing such a warm and friendly new home. Sincere thanks are also extended to Home Care staff, especially Jimmy, Beth and Sarah, who brightened their days and took such good care of them. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca Flowers are appreciated or donations in memory of Fern may be made to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank or a charity of choice.
