JOYCE ETHEL DICKSON Joyce Dickson died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, Sunday night, April 23, 2006. Paralyzed on her right side by a stroke, Joyce spent the last two years at Misericordia Health Centre. Predeceased in 1981 by her twin sister, Gladys Sim of Ontario. Because of her poor eyesight, Joyce went directly to normal school after graduating from Gordon Bell High School. She began her teaching career in Dugald, MB and immediately took education courses by correspondence. Joyce traveled many times to Europe during the summer holidays, and over the years taught in several elementary schools in Winnipeg. Her last school was Laura Secord. During her lifetime she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Education from the University of Toronto. After the death of her twin, Joyce took early retirement. Whenever she was shopping or visiting in different areas of the city, she was constantly approached by young women and men, who would rush to speak to her, Do you remember me? I was in your Grade 4 class! You were my teacher! Cards and letters often came from some of her former pupils and that pleased her a great deal. Since 1940, Joyce worshipped at First Presbyterian Church where she made many friends and experienced a variety of ministers. Joyce was also a devoted member of the University Women's Club of Winnipeg where she especially appreciated the desserts that were served at Drop-In lunches. If any of her friends or former pupils would like to do something in her honour, Joyce makes a special request. No flowers and no gifts to charities. What I would really like is that you befriend a youngster or two in your neighbourhood. Support that child or those children, remember their birthdays, listen to their stories, get to know their families, and enjoy the reactions you will receive. Joyce leaves to mourn her sister Rev. Dr. Irene J. Dickson; her cousins Clifford (Marceline) Peshal, in Lindsay, ON; Grace Segerkvist in Sault Ste. Marie; and Mavis Wright (Steve) in Nevada, U.S.A. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, and the service will be conducted by Joyce's friend, the Reverend Amy Campbell. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • "Miss Dickson" was unique. She inspired my entire class In grade 4 Lord Roberts Elementary - right until we left high school, most of us believed she was the best teacher we had. That is no small tribute when you consider our principals included the Nethercott sisters, Scurfield, & Sybil Shack who have become legends in their own right. I am surprised that no buildings or awards have been named in her honor. We read the Bible every morning in those days & she lived it in front of us. The Christmas pageant she directed us in is still a cherished memory. I lied one day & she dressed me down in front of the class, so I rode my bike to her house to apologize. That was when we became friends. Thirty years later when I was living in Toronto, I phoned her & she came with her sister to have dinner. Knowing that it was my son's first birthday, she brought him a drum - she had a sense of humor! I wish I had spent more time getting to know her. - Posted by: John Ellis (Former student & friend) on: May 26, 2014

  • Miss Dickson was my teacher for three years at Faraday School. Along with Mr. C. Moody, who was my teacher in high school, I name her as my inspiration to teach. I remember so many things she used to say (some of which I use with my students today). I kept up a Christmas card correspondence with Miss Dickson for many years after I moved on to junior high and high school, and often spied her little red car. I lost touch with her as I grew up, but while in university in the late 80's I sent her a Christmas card. I was delighted when she called me to invite me to dinner! Alas, I again lost touch, although I thought of her often. I hadn't realized that she'd passed away. However, today, April 23, 2012, I had the urge to look up "Joyce Ethel Dickson" on Google and discovered that this was the sixth anniversary of her death. An odd coincidence! I am sorry to have left it too late to contact her again. I would like to have told her that I now teach grade 6, that my favourite subject to teach is social studies, and that I channel many of the things she said and did when teaching my students. She was truly an amazing educator: tough, exacting, innovative, interesting, and kind. She is, as I said earlier, one of the reasons I teach, and I consider her my role model for elementary education.
