JULIA KUNKA Julia Kunka passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at the Health Sciences Centre. Julia is survived by her two daughters, Gloria of Ottawa and Leona (Bill); her dearly loved granddaughters, Cheryl (Dale) and Heather (Ron); two cherished great-grandchildren, Liam and Gabrielle of Winnipeg; her brother Stanley in England; her sister Pauka in the Ukraine; and many nieces and nephews and their families in Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband Leo; granddaughter Janice and four sisters in Ukraine. Julia's love for her family and her vibrant and vivacious spirit will be sadly missed. Julia was born on October 25, 1911 in Skala in Western Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1927. She lived in Caliento, MB with relatives where she attended school, and then moved to Winnipeg where she met and married Leo Kunka. She held various jobs and retired in 1976 from the National Drug Company. She was very active in community affairs devoting much of her time to hospital visiting and seniors' organizations. Julia was a very devoted mother who supported her daughters and granddaughters pursuit of higher education and was very proud of their achievements. To celebrate her 80th birthday she travelled to England with her daughter Gloria to visit her brother whom she had not seen since leaving Ukraine. In the same year she traveled to California and Mexico with her family. Julia faced several health challenges throughout her life; the most recent was cancer, which had been successfully managed. She died unexpectedly from unrelated causes. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Patricia Harris, to the home care workers, and her supportive friends at Keystone Manor who provided the assistance and support that she needed to continue to live independently. A private family service was held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with the Rev. Joan Jarvis officiating. Interment followed in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca. Remembrances may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of one's choice in Julia's memory. CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715
