JEAN IRENE BARROW (nee POSELUZNEY) June 24, 1924 - April 26, 2006 Peacefully on Wednesday evening at the Selkirk General Hospital with family at her side Jean passed away after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born to Pauline and John Poseluzney in Cooks Creek, MB. She was employed for many years at Eaton's in their cosmetic department. Always dressed impeccably, one could hardly miss her in passing the area. In 1942 she married John Barrow and initially they resided on Flora Avenue before moving to their dream house on Fearn Avenue in East Kildonan. After her husband passed away she continued to reside there until 2001 when she moved into the Kiwanis on the Red condos in Selkirk. She enjoyed her river front garden suite. She became very active in the social activities at the complex and was in charge of organizing and coordinating the many monthly and sometimes weekly activities. Just two weeks ago she organized their fifth anniversary celebration. Jean was predeceased by her husband John, brother Lawrence Polson, and sisters, Marie Saunders and Alice Tunnoch. She is survived by sisters Sophie Oleksuk and Stella Oshanek as well as eight nieces and nephews, Cynthia Rance (Derek), Janice Marcinyk (Sadley), Gerry Cason (Bob), Lorraine Halchuck (Don), Bob Tunnoch (Sandra), Calvin Oleksuk (Darlene), Chris Tunnoch and Donald Oleksuk. Jean was a very special person who enjoyed the company of friends and relatives. She could relate not only to her peers but also exceptionally well to the younger generation. Not having children of her own, she adopted her nieces and nephews and their families as her own. They always remembered her with personal visits, cards and frequent phone calls. She enjoyed following the success of her nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. This brought great joy to her as this was her very extended family. Jean and John enjoyed their summers at their cottage at Twin Lakes Beach. They would spend most of the summer from the time the snow melted to the time it appeared on the ground again. Jean continued this on her own until this year when she was too weak to go out. They also enjoyed their many excursions to warmer climates such as Barbados, Jamaica, Cuba, Australia, Hawaii and Portugal. Jean fondly remembered her cruises with Cynthia to Alaska and Russia. She encouraged her extended family to travel when they were in good health and able to do so. Special thanks go to Dr. Zacharias at Health Sciences and Dr. Badenhorst at the Selkirk Clinic. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3G 9Z9. GILBART FUNERAL HOME, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
