ETHEL MABEL BIRD (nee CEDERWALL) Ethel Mabel Bird (nee Cederwall) passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Lions Personal Care Centre, Winnipeg. Ethel was born in Pellatt, ON, on November 20, 1918. She was the fifth daughter in a family of 16, born to Amelia Catherine and Theodore Per Cederwall. She attended school in the one room schoolhouse at Pellatt, and won the T. Eaton Co. cup given to the Champion Pupil at the Pellatt and Ostersund Rural School Fair in 1931. Through her youth and into early adulthood, she worked on the family farm at Sandy Lake. She married George Henry Bird in Winnipeg in 1955. George was employed with Kingsway Freightlines, and they were transferred to Calgary soon after. They moved from Calgary to Toronto in 1956, and returned to Winnipeg in 1962. They made their home in the west end of Winnipeg, where they entertained their families with New Year's, Grey Cup, Stanley Cup and holiday parties. The coffee pot was always on, and anyone was welcome in their home. They purchased a cottage in Matlock, MB in 1970, and both Ethel and George's families have many wonderful memories of the Bird's Nest at 4 Matlock Rd. Ethel always made sure that everyone was well taken care of. The best assessment anyone could receive from Ethel was her declaration that he was a lovely man . Ethel was predeceased by her husband George; and also by her parents; and her brothers, Harry, Everett, Eric, Edwin, Edmund, Elmer, Edward; and her sisters, Astrid, Violet, Elsie and Edna; all of Kenora, ON. She is survived by her brothers, Rudolph and his wife Vicky and Rickard and his wife Vi; her sisters-in-law, Rose and Julie; her brother-in-law Charles Sharples, all also of Kenora, ON and her sister Evelyn Lindquist, of Winnipeg. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Jim Bird, of Winnipeg. She will be remembered by many nieces and nephews both in Winnipeg and in Kenora. A service of remembrance will be held at Neil Bardal Inc. at 984 Portage Ave. (entrance on Aubrey Street), on Monday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined and donations may be made to Khartum Shrine Temple, in care of 1155 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9.
