MICHALINA (LENA) STEPHANCHEW (nee GARBOLINSKI) It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Lena with her son Richard by her side at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 89 years on May 6, 2006. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years John and son Roger. Lena is survived by her sons, Robert (Diana) Stevan, Richard (Louise) Stephanchew; grandsons Rick (Wendy), Randy (Sheri), Rodney (Jennifer) and Ryan (Kim) Stephanchew; granddaughters, Karen (John) Stevan, Robyn (Diego) Stevan-Matamoros; great-grandchildren Alix, Taylor, Nicholas, Noah, Riley and Reed (Stephanchew); Michael Stevantoni, Chloe and Dominque Matamoros. She is also survived by her sister Mary Collins. As well she will be missed by her devoted nephew Greg (Jan) Bizruchak, niece Joanne McGillivray and nephew Dr. Roger (Florence) Collins and their families. Mom married at 19 and became a devoted wife, and mother to her three sons. Her husband John and his brother Walter established W J Stephanchew Church Goods Company in 1949 and operated it until retirement in 1980. It was a good life travelling to conventions in New York, Chicago, Miami and many other places throughout Canada and the United States. They enjoyed spending summer weekends at the cottage at Sandy Hook, entertaining family and friends. Mom was a wonderful cook and homemaker. In latter years she did some volunteer work at Holy Family Nursing Home and indulged her passion for reading. Her wit and feistiness will be remembered. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Barbara Biala and the staff of the 5th floor, Unit 4, Seven Oaks Hospital, for their excellent care and compassion. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 11:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home with interment and reception to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Msgr. Maurice Comeault officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Room ON1160, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
