Date of Passing: May 04, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEFAN (STEVE) EYJOLFSON Peacefully with family at his side, Steve Eyjolfson, passed away at the Heritage Lodge in Winnipeg on Thursday, May 4, 2006. Our dad's memory will be cherished by his five children, Clayton (Lise), Garnet (Shirley), Roy (Angela), Lynne (James) and Heather (Bob). Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren will fondly remember treasured moments with their grandfather as well. He is survived by three sisters, Thoranna of Winnipeg, Gudrun of Arborg and Loreen of Prince Albert, SK. He lost his loving wife and true lifelong partner of 51 years, Una, in 1994. He was also predeceased by his daughter Cynthia in 1963, father Sveinn and mother Steinun, brothers, Eyolfur, Stenni and Karl. Dad was born in Geysir, MB on April 5, 1917. He grew up on the family farm and at a very early age developed many skills working with his hands, and realized he was blessed with a gift for working with wood. This talent was evident in everything from making milking stools for the barn, on through to cabinetry, boats and houses. He spent time commercial fishing on Lake Winnipeg during the winters with his father and brothers and this was followed by several years working underground in Sudbury's nickel mines. Returning to Manitoba, Mom and Dad farmed near Riverton and Dad managed the North American Lumber yard in Arborg. It was the lumber business that brought them to their final home in Dryden in 1955. With Mom at his side, he ventured out on his own in 1958 with a Service Station and Restaurant in Ignace. After moving back to Dryden in 1963 Mom and Dad purchased Wick Cliff Lodge and expanded the outpost camp to become Silver Water Wheel Lodge. Anyone seeing him at camp understood that this proved to be Dad's passion and legacy. A rewarding retirement began in 1979, spending time with family and friends, and traveling in the winter months in Canada, the US, and a bit abroad. Summers were spent at home and at camp. Dad loved fishing and was present when most of his grandchildren caught their first Walleye. Fishing, shore lunches and sharing fish stories will be memories that we will treasure forever. Visitation for Steve Eyjolfson was held on Monday, May 8 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, May 9 from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. with Louise Lomas officiating. Internment followed at the Dryden Cemetery. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Heritage Lodge and Bethania Nursing Home for the care provided to Dad over the last few years. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society through the Dryden Community Funeral Home, 249 Grand Truck Ave., Dryden, ON P8N 2X3.
