GEORGE MYRAN KEE-TA-BA-NE-SEE (Circling Thunderbird) June 14, 1921 - May 10, 2006 Peacefully on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, George Myran left on his Journey to the Spirit World. He was predeceased by parents, Tom and Naomi; his siblings, Ena, Elizabeth, Bertha, Rudy, Alex, Gilbert and Robert; sons, Donald and Timothy; daughters, Joyce and Valerie. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Daisy; children, Margaret, Johnny (Gertie), Gloria, Ralph (Veronica), Patricia, Glen, Terry (Darlene), Edward, Douglas, Darryl, Cynthia (Nathan); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, his sister Joan, brother Fred and many nieces and nephews. George was born at the Long Plain First Nation on June 14, 1921. He received his education at the Portage Residential School. When Canada was at war, he volunteered and enlisted on October 21, 1942. He was evidently posted to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and took part in the Normandy Invasion, D-Day at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944. He remained in France, Belgium and Holland until the war ended. He received his discharge in March of 1946 and married Daisy Meeches on May 9, 1946. They raised 13 children together. During his early years as provider, he was a farmer and labourer and supplemented his income by hunting, fishing and trapping. He served as Chief of the Long Plain First Nation, but his main occupation was carpentry. He also served as a Commissioner in Winnipeg and Ontario. A Wake will begin on Sunday, May 14, at 4:00 p.m. at the Long Plain Community Hall, Long Plain First Nation, followed by a Traditional Service starting at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 15. Daughter Gloria Greatwalker will be officiating. It is an honour to have as active pallbearers: Bruce Montour from Six Nations, ONT, Howard Nelson of Roseau River, Nathan Peters from the Sto:lo First Nation, Marvin Daniels of the Long Plain First Nation, Louis Myran Jr. of the Long Plain First Nation and Delmer Assiniboine representing the Dakota of the Long Plain First Nation. Burial will take place at Myran/Woods Cemetery. Special thanks to the Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches and Councillors for their constant care and support. Also special thanks to the staff at the Dakota Oyate Lodge, the Brandon District Hospital, the Portage District General Hospital, the Lions Prairie Manor and the Long Plain Health Centre for the wonderful care provided. Thank you to Geri Prince and the Long Plain Volunteer Women's Group for feast food prepared. Flowers are gratefully declined. In preparation for his Journey, Dad performed traditional ceremonies. He has completed his Circle of Life. Mee-gwich, Gi-ji-maa-ni-do for the time he walked with us on earth.
