LOUIS STEFAN GISLASON (STEVE) It is with sadness, that we announce the passing of Steve Gislason, on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at the Arborg Personal Care Home at the age of 91 years. Steve is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emily; his daughters, Sharon (Jerry) and Shirley (Lorne); grandchildren, Joseph, Stuart, Michael, Amanda (Kevin), Steven; great-grandson August; his sisters, Helga, Gudny, Toby (Jerry) and brother Njall (Stina) as well as Emily's siblings, Sigurbjorg, Sigurros, Beatrice, John, Julius (Jessie). Steve was predeceased by his sister Gilla and brothers, Einar, Halli and Paul and his great-granddaughter Jackie Lynn. Steve was born on November 14, 1914 and was raised in the Framnes area. In 1948, he married Emily Snifeld and together they raised their daughters on a small mixed farm. In later years, he supplemented the farm income by working as an adjuster for the MB Crop Insurance Corp. He was well known for his fair appraisals and was often called to work in other areas of the province. A strong believer in community involvement, he served on many boards and committees over the years. Including the Vestri School Board, Arborg Ag. Society, Arborg and District History Book, Riverdale Place Homes, Arborg Credit Union, hall, and curling rink to name a few. He was a school trustee for the Evergreen School Division. He was a very modest man, but he took great pride in being the last remaining charter member of the Arborg Credit Union. And was proud to be a board member of the Arborg Hospital during the time that the Medical Clinic was being built. (He was in his later 70's at the time.) He began curling in the 50's and continued to enjoy the game as an avid armchair curler. He enjoyed fishing with the boys, camping and watching the grandkids play their sports. He was a gentle, kind, fair and generous man who was always willing to help a friend or family member. He had endless patience, which he attributed to living in a house with three redheads. He was proud of his sons-in-law and their successful careers and of his grandchildren, who could talk to him about anything. But he was most proud of our close knit family. Steve was not a young man when he became a father. And we are so grateful that he stayed with us long enough to see his girls and the boys retire to the Arborg area. To see his grandchildren begin their careers and adult lives, and to see Gus grow from a baby to a little boy. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Tudor Home, and Arborg Personal Care home for the excellent care given during his last year. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A notice will be posted in the Winnipeg Free Press. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
