Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT FRANCIS THORNTON Robert Francis Thornton, 69, of Winnipeg, MB, formerly of Fort William / Thunder Bay, ON and Chesterfield Inlet, NU, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2006. Bob will be greatly missed by his daughters, Karen, Sheila (Marcelo) and grandson Dante; sister Kathryn (Brian) and nephew Eric; former wife Florance (née Boehler) and many close friends and colleagues. Bob loved the outdoors and spent a good portion of his life hunting and fishing in the company of good friends. He and close friend Gary Lyon could often be found heading north to Loon Straits and spent countless hours working on their lakeside cabin. Bob was well known in the community for his wealth of knowledge of firearms and military history. His interest in the military began at a young age, when he joined the Fort William Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. He then served in the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment, rising to the rank of lieutenant before relocating to Winnipeg in 1966, where he transferred to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and began his lifelong association with the Royal Canadian Legion, St. James Branch No. 4. Bob's gregarious personality served him well in his long and prolific career, notably as manager of the Winnipeg Supply Gun Shop from 1984 to 1989 followed by a 10 year affiliation with the Arctic Co-operatives Ltd, relocating to Chesterfield Inlet to manage the general store and hotel. His laughter and sense of humour will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ducks Unlimited, the Royal Canadian Legion or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Thomson Funeral Chapel on 669 Broadway at Furby. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPEL (204) 783-7211.
