WARREN EDWIN ALFRED HANKS Our father, Warren Edwin Alfred Hanks, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at the Health Sciences Centre. The son of Geraldine and A.W. (Bill) Hanks, Warren was born in Winnipeg on February 10, 1930. Warren married Lorna Hall on June 4, 1955 and together they raised four children, Barbara, Catherine, Gordon and Wayne. Dad was a lifelong resident of St, James in the neighbourhoods of Douglas Park Road, Silver Heights, Westwood, Woodhaven and Sturgeon Creek. A proud and loving father and grandfather, he could frequently be found at the rink or on the sidelines, shouting cheers of encouragement. Dad enjoyed the visits and antics of his Brereton Lake friends and the opportunity to still get there at least once each summer meant a great deal to him. Estelle's home-cooked meals and weekly outings with Ron highlighted the days after he lost his beloved Lorna in 2003. The son of a newspaper man, the printing industry became his lifelong career. Starting with the St. James Leader under the editorial tutelage of his father, Dad later worked at The Lance and then in 1963 he and his partners started Spartan Printing Limited. Dad and Mom together started up Admiral Printing in 1984, giving son Wayne an opportunity to work alongside Dad. Dad truly loved and enjoyed people from all walks of life. He was blessed with an amazing sense of humour that knew no bounds and he had a nickname for just about everyone he met. His ability to put a smile on everyone's face, no matter how long or brief the encounter, brightened the days of friend and stranger alike. Warren was the fortunate beneficiary of a second chance at life in 1998 when he received a transplant at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. This gave Dad an opportunity to see his grandchildren grow up and to spend quality time with his family. The family were so appreciative of the attentive personalized care and compassion of all of the specialists who cared for him over the years, including Dr. Kelly Kaita, Dr. Barry Rosser, Dr. Gerald Minuk, Dr. E. Renner and nurses Rose and Vicky. The family also wishes to thank all of the nurses, aides and medical doctors on H4 for their gentleness, care and assistance, especially Dr. Kathy Unger. Warren leaves to mourn his daughter Barbara (David King), his daughter Catherine (Greg Skinner), his son Gordon and his son Wayne (Karen Hanks). His grandchildren, Eric and Diana King, Shaughn and Bradley Skinner and Matthew and Stuart Hanks will always remember their grandpa's wit and affectionate greetings. He also leaves his dear sister Alice Johnston and brother-in-law Ron (Ann Hall) and nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Warren will be held on Friday, June 16 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg with Teresa Campbell officiating. A reception will follow the service. Pallbearers will be David Fraser, Ken Sarahs, David Hanson, Blair Robillard, Wade Robillard, and Robert Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be Craig Robillard, Grace and Ron Robillard, William and Estelle Eaton, Robert and Joyce Gallaher, Hugh Johnstone, Pat Fraser and Ralph Hanson. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire donations may be made to the Health Sciences Centre Foundation at Room MS 107, 820 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9 designated for Dr. Minuk's Liver Research fund.
