LEON GOMIEN Peacefully but after a courageous battle with cancer, Leon left us to meet his Maker on June 17, 2006 at the Riverview Health Centre. Leon was born to Auguste and Rosalie Gomien of Marchand on June 12, 1926. In 1952 he married the love of his life, Susanne (Braun). Their daughter Gina was born in 1963. Leon learned the value of hard work as a young man helping in the family store and helping his father with land clearing. Leon began a career with CN Railway in 1946. For the next 36 years, Leon worked as a telegraph operator, rail hand and railway station agent, lastly in Lundar, MB. With the era of rural station agents ending, Leon accepted a position at the CN station in Winnipeg and worked there until his retirement in 1982. Leon was a devoted husband and father. Gina was born with Downs Syndrome and Leon and Susanne made working for the mentally challenged a priority. He remained actively involved in her life and her work as long as he was able, continuing to be her primary care giver until April, 2006. In 1958 Leon became a Free Masons brother, being a member of Charleswood Red River Lodge at the time of his death. Family and friends will miss Leon but none more than Susanne, his loving wife of 54 years, and his daughter Gina. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Therese, Rose and Denise. In addition to his wife and daughter, He is survived by sisters, Margaret and Emily (Mike). A service to honor Leon's life will be held on Wednesday, June 21 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave., with interment and reception to follow. Should friends so desire, donations in Leon's memory can be made to Manitoba CancerCare. A special thank you goes to the loving and caring staff at Riverview Health Centre Palliatire Care Centre E3. An extra thank you goes to Ina Bas-Penner, Chaplain.
