JACK CLEMENT RIEL It is with great sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Jack Clement Riel, at his home on Saturday, June 17, 2006. Left with fond memories are his wife Nina; daughters, Carolyn Thompson (Tim) of Surrey, BC and Kathryn Carlyle (John) of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Robert and Deanna Carlyle; sisters, Mildred Husiak (Harry), Bernice Stringer and Shirley Dean (Gary); brother Robert (Maude); sister-in-law Marge Riel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Edward Riel; brothers, Eric in infancy, Ray, Keith and Albert (Bill) Riel; and sisters, Janie and Marguerite. On April 1, 1932, Jack was born in Thunder Bay (Fort William), ON and was educated at Franklin Elementary and Fort William Collegiate. He has had many good times with numerous friends and neighbours over the years. In his younger days, Jack loved playing senior basketball in the T.B. league and also fishing with his buddies in the lakes south east of Kenora. He was a member of the GEE JAY Lake Fishing Club. After retirement, Jack enjoyed golfing and snooker with his buddies at A.N.A.F No. 283, as well as, curling with Saturday Niners. Euchre was also a great enjoyment. Our family meant the world to Jack. He was the family's rock that always was there to offer sound advice. Jack always made us laugh, had a twinkle in his eye and a generous and kind heart. His love for his grandchildren was immense. Their presence brought him joy and he instilled his love of life and his sense of determination in them. Robert and Deanna will truly miss their special times with their Granddad. He will always be fondly remembered and missed by his family and friends. Jack's 44 year career began with the Canadian Grain Commission in 1952. He transferred to Winnipeg in 1970 as a scale inspector and was soon promoted to Prairie Regional Manager, then to Deputy Director of Audits and Scales followed by Deputy Director of Operations and finally, Chief of Weighing for Canada. Jack travelled from coast to coast across Canada and the United States. Jack worked very closely with the US Department of Agriculture in an effort to standardize weighing systems between the two countries. On Thursday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m., Jack's funeral service will be held in Westwood Presbyterian Church, 197 Browning Bvld., with Rev. Kevin MacDonald officiating. Nina would like to thank family, friends and neighbours for their loving support over the last challenging few weeks. She would also like to thank Dr. Hugh Smith for the care Jack received from him over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
