LLOYD WESLEY SMITH Peacefully, with his family at his side, Lloyd Wesley Smith, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home. Born at Rathwell, MB, March 18, 1916, youngest son of the late W. T. Smith and Maggie Smith, who farmed in the Indianford District. Lloyd managed the family farm until moving to Winnipeg and Montreal, where he worked for Air Canada, retiring in 1975. Lloyd loved music and played with dance bands during the years of the big band era. He even converted his barn into a dance hall, where he booked big bands from coast to coast, and where he met the love of his life. He married Zel Wray of Treherne in July 1944. Lloyd enjoyed a full and active life in all the communities where he lived and worked; Treherne, Winnipeg, Montreal, Florida and Victoria Beach. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and in his later years was an avid curler and golfer In 1985 Lloyd and Zel returned to Winnipeg where they joined Trinity United Church in Fort Richmond, an association that has been so very meaningful over the last 20 years. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents; four sisters, Jessie, Elsie, Isabel and Reita; and by his brothers, Earl and Fred. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Zel; daughter Myrna MacKenzie (Bob Holman) and grandsons, Ian and Brad MacKenzie; daughter Joan-Dianne Smith (James Giesbrecht) and grandchildren, David, Peter (Amanda Gibbons), Maryann and great-granddaughter Krysta. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in law and many nieces and nephews. Special thank you to the devoted staff of Calvary Place for the loving care they have shown to Lloyd and his family. We greatly appreciate all the kindness, understanding and support of friends, neighbours and church community over the last few months. A memorial service to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held Monday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with Rev. Milly Malavsky of Trinity United Church presiding. A reception will follow. A family interment will take place at a later date at Woodlands Cemetery near Treherene, MB.
