JEAN SMEREKA Jean passed away peacefully on June 20, 2006 at the Holy Family Nursing Home with her family by her side. She was predeceased by husband Peter in 1981; sisters, Claire Okrusko of Saskatoon, SK and Olga Serbenski of Warren, MI; and sister-in-law Ann Salki of Winnipeg. She is survived by her son Edward (Virginia) of Aurora, ON; grandchildren, Peter (Brenda); great-grandson Aidan of Ann Arbor, MI; Karen (Michael) of Stowe, VT; Susan of Burlington, VT and Robert of Newmarket, ON; her brother William Salki of Winnipeg; brother-in-law John Serbenski of Warren, MI; nieces and nephews, Judy Knight (Bob) and her daughters, Trish of Raleigh, NC, Carrie Almonte (Nick) of Winnipeg and Shannon of Calgary, AB; Michael (Donna) of Calgary, Georgie (Barry) of Saskatoon, SK; Patsy (Albert) of Winnipeg; Alexander (Cathy) of Winnipeg and Kenneth (Donna) of Mich. Jean was born in Winnipeg where she lived all of her life. She and her husband operated a hardware store in the north end for several years and later worked at the shaver bar at Eaton's. Jean was an active member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and in more recent years attended Mass at the Holy Family Nursing Home. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling life accepting every life change she encountered and made the best of it. She had many long-lasting friendships until her recent passing. Jean will be ever remembered for her gracious hospitality in her home; great baking and warm smile. Special thanks to her niece Judy Knight and her family and her brother William Salki for their continued support and care over the years. The staff at Holy Family provided Jean with exceptional care and commitment to her health and comfort. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Arthritis Society.
