CHARLES MILLER DOWSE On Tuesday, June 27, 2006, after a period of declining health, Charles died at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 78. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Ruth; sons, David (Eileen), Tim (Helen) and Mike (Stacey); and his daughter Kate (Eric). Grandchildren, Bryan, Kathleen, John, Carl, Ben, Aidan and Riley will also miss their grandfather. Charles was predeceased by two of his children, Andrew (1964) and Peter (1969) and by his parents, his brother Chris and his sister Joan (in England) Charles was born in England in 1928 and met his future wife Ruth in 1951. Charles and Ruth quickly became inseparable, marrying in 1957, and they have been lifetime companions and best friends ever since. Charles received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and then he and Ruth moved to Rochester, NY, where they started their family. In 1960, they moved to Winnipeg, when Charles was offered a job as a professor at the University of Manitoba's newly founded Faculty of Dentistry. He conducted research, taught physiology to dental students and took on many extra responsibilities with the University. He was a devoted member of the faculty for 33 years until he retired in 1993, at which time he continued to work for a few years as a volunteer. Winnipeg became Charles and Ruth's true home, with all their children being raised and attending school there. Family camping holidays and canoe trips are a special family memory, and were responsible for developing a love of the outdoors, an appreciation for adventure and travel off the beaten path that remains strong with Ruth and with his children and grandchildren. His lifelong interest in photography has captured many of these happy family memories. His family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the members of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service and also to the Doctors and nurses at the St. Boniface General Hospital for their professional and compassionate work during the last few years. Friends and neighbours continue to be a source of great support and we are also thankful for this. Cremation will take place and a private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a donation to a charity of their choice. THOMSON IN THE PARK FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 MCGILLIVRAY BLVD. (BETWEEN PEMBINA WAVERLEY) 925-1120
