BERNARD (BEN) ELDON FRIESEN On Thursday, June 30, 2006 after a period of declining health Ben died at Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora, ON, at the age of 81. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years Joyce, his daughter Donna, son Doug; grandchildren Colleen, Michelle, Tami and Lisa; great grandchildren Brandon, Krysta, Joshua and Bailey; brothers Norm (Gwen) and Richard (Connie). Ben was predeceased by daughter Janie, sisters Ella, Margaret and Dorothy and brother Roland. Ben was born in Plum Coulee July 5, 1924. At the age of 16 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Durham, South Africa. On his return to Winnipeg he met and married Joyce Engel and embarked on a long and successful career in commercial real estate. He served his community as President of the St. Boniface Rotary, Chairman of the Board for the St. Vital YMCA and as an elder of the St. Vital United Church. Ben and Joyce enjoyed their yearly winter travels to the southern States and Caribbean where they golfed and fished. He enjoyed golf as a member of Niakwa Golf and Country Club and won the club trophy in 1966. In the mid 70's Ben semi-retired and moved with Joyce to Lake of the Woods where he developed many properties around the area. He spent many days enjoying boating, fishing and hunting. In the mid 90's they moved to Beauty Bay where Ben continued to be very active participating in his favorite pastimes including his penchant for winning at cribbage. The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Lake of the Woods Hospital for their compassion and professional care. If friends so desire donations can be made to the Cancer Foundation or the Association for Parkinson's Disease. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 6, 2006 at the Kenora Community Funeral Home 821 St. Clair St., (Keewatin) 547-6000.
