LAWRENCE MURRAY STEWART October 8, 1923 - July 4, 2006 Peacefully, after a period of declining health, Murray passed away at the Grace General Hospital. Murray will be sadly missed by his wife, Alice, to whom he was married for 60 years, his son Donald (Jacqui), grandson Aubrey, and daughter Patricia. He was predeceased by his siblings Bill, Gordon, Joyce, and Laurie. Murray was born in Rochester, Minnesota. The son of a Canadian Pacific Rail stationmaster, Murray was raised in a train station in rural Saskatchewan and began his own career as a telegraph operator for the CPR in the 1940s. He worked in the telecommunications field for 40 years, beginning in Estevan, SK where he met Alice, and eventually moving to Regina where his children were born. In 1971 he moved his family to Winnipeg, where he held a position as a regional planner with CNCP Telecommunications until his retirement in 1985. Murray's hobby was oil and acrylic painting. In this he was as modest as he was talented. Loathe to participate in competitions or to accept money for his paintings, he chose to lovingly share his art with those he cared most about. His work proudly hangs in the homes of his friends and loved ones across Canada. Murray's fondness for his grandson, Aubrey, was a joy to behold as they spent many hours playing hide and seek and enjoying each other's company. Aubrey will have many memories of his grandpa to cherish and also seems to have inherited his artistic talents. The kindness and caring shown by the staff at Heritage Lodge and Grace Hospital 3 North made Murray's final days as comfortable and meaningful as possible. The family acknowledges with gratitude the great work by these dedicated professionals. Cremation has already taken place. In keeping with Murray's wishes, a private family service will be held on July 10, 2006 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of one's own choosing would be most appreciated.
